WHY TUTORING?

My child has lost interest in school. How can you help?

Children lose interest for a variety of reasons. Some simply feel lost in the crowd at school. Others have not been shown the encouragement they need and, as a result, they feel incapable of succeeding. It always boils down to this: they no longer feel motivated to try to succeed. At Zamft Tutoring we work with our students to understand how to motivate and reward them individually, and to rekindle their interest in learning. Once this happens, we help them recognize, celebrate, and build on their new successes. Learning, too, becomes its own reward once again.

How can I tell if my child needs a tutor?

Some children tell their parents they need help, but this is rare. Poor grades are a clear sign that your child needs help, but there are more subtle signs to watch for. If your child seems unhappy about going to school (or even talking about school), chances are he or she needs a tutor. Sometimes your child will say things that reflect low self-confidence, such as “I’m just not smart enough” or “I just can’t do it” – or you may just notice a change in attitude. The important thing is to act as soon as possible. The longer a child struggles, the longer he or she will take to build self-confidence and recapture the joy of learning those things that are fundamental to future success.

My child seems to be doing fine in school. How can tutoring help?

For over 20 years, we have worked with students across a broad spectrum of skill levels, capability, and motivation. We have found that, in the vast majority of cases, our students have achieved greater success as a result of working with us. A teacher with a classroom full of students simply cannot give each student the individual attention that makes tutoring so effective. Even gifted students have achieved higher grades or test scores by being challenged at their own level in tutoring sessions while feeling bored in school.

ABOUT ZAMFT TUTORING

What makes Zamft Tutoring so much better?

Our students consistently achieve extraordinary gains in their coursework and test scores. Perhaps the strongest proof of Zamft Tutoring’s excellence is that so many parents return to Zamft Tutoring a second and third time after we’ve tutored one of their children. We will be happy to provide references – just give us a call at (914) 548-4163 or (914) 232-1790.

How do we do it? We approach each and every child with genuine, caring concern. We never use cookie cutter solutions – we work hard to devise the best possible program for each individual, and we never stop making small changes to each child’s program in response to his or her specific needs and progress.

At Zamft Tutoring we have been tutoring to the highest standards of quality for over twenty years. Our longevity as an organization reflects our passion for the work we do and our commitment to helping every student achieve the highest level of success and achievement possible. What are your tutors’ qualifications? All of our tutors are experienced, state-certified secondary teachers. In addition, they have at least five years of experience in individualized tutoring in the subject areas or standardized test preparation in which they now specialize.

OUR TUTORING PROGRAMS

What kinds of tutoring do you offer?

We provide individualized programs for middle and high school students in all academic subjects. In addition, we offer tutoring in standardized college and private high school entrance exams – PSAT, SAT, ACT, SSAT, and ISEE. Our highly individualized one-on-one and very small group (2 or 3 students) tutoring produces extraordinary results both short-term and long-term. Students quickly gain new knowledge and skills that they can put to work immediately. In addition, they develop self-confidence and effective study habits and test-taking skills that will serve them well long after their tutoring program with us has been completed.

ONLINE/REMOTE TUTORING

How does online tutoring work?

Unlike so many other “online tutoring” arrangements, our online sessions are LIVE. In other words, the student is interacting directly with the tutor. The computer on each end has a microphone, speaker, and camera (“webcam”). Using Skype and a properly equipped computer, the student enjoys the same one-on-one tutoring experience and attention as those who work with us face-to-face. Please call us at (914) 548-4163 or (914) 232-1790 to find out how easy it is to set up your computer for this convenient alternative.

STANDARDIZED TEST PREPARATION TUTORING: PSAT / SAT / ACT / SSAT / ISEE

What makes Zamft Tutoring the best choice for standardized test preparation?

Most tutoring services hire individuals whose sole qualification is that they have done well on these tests. Zamft Tutoring hires only certified teachers who are experienced with these specific tests and are also able to tailor the tutoring process to each child’s particular learning style. Also, because we are a small family-run business, we are able to focus on the needs of the child and not on numbers.

Why should my child get SAT or ACT tutoring?

Our SAT/ACT students achieve significant increases in their scores. The reason this type of improvement is so important is that it opens new doors. Higher exam scores often translate into admission to a school that previously was out of reach. In addition, better scores frequently lead to scholarships and grants to schools that would otherwise be unaffordable. Another benefit of SAT/ACT tutoring is that your child will develop organizational and test-taking skills that will give him or her an extra edge throughout the college years and even beyond. Don’t skip having your child tutored, even if he or she is doing well in school – you might regret it after it’s too late.

Should I take the SAT or the ACT?

Your decision should be based on your thinking style. Each test is very different from the other. The SAT is vocabulary-oriented, and it measures aptitude and analytical thinking. The ACT is a test of achievement and measures what you have learned. We believe that you should maximize your options and consider taking both tests.

How many hours of tutoring do I need?

In order to be prepared, you should expect to have 12-16 hours of tutoring for the SAT and 8-12 hours for the ACT. Additional sessions may be scheduled as needed.

Should I take the SSAT or the ISEE?

The test you take is determined by the school to which you are applying. Some require the SSAT, while others require the ISEE. We teach strategies specific to each unique test.

What kind of results can I expect?

Higher Scores! Of course, you have to complete the homework assignments and practice the strategies.

SPECIAL NEEDS & GIFTED CHILDREN

Do you tutor children who have special needs?

Yes, we welcome such students. We have worked with children diagnosed with Asperger’s disorder, ADD, ADHD, PDD, and various learning disabilities and processing difficulties. Please call us at (914) 548‐4163 or (914) 232‐1790 to find out how we can help your child reach new heights!

What about gifted children?

Gifted children have their own special needs. At Zamft Tutoring we know how to inspire and motivate these children, who often feel bored in school. We will challenge them in ways that aren’t possible in the school classroom environment, where the teacher cannot possibly focus on the individual student for more than a few minutes each day – if at all.

GETTING STARTED: WHERE / WHEN / HOW

You say that one-on-one tutoring is the best. Why do you also offer small group tutoring?

We offer small group tutoring for those who prefer a more affordable alternative. By limiting our small groups to no more than 3 students, we are still able to provide a program that is tailored to each individual student. During our small group sessions, both or all three students are involved in group discussions, but we also set aside time for each individual. During these segments, one student at a time has our undivided attention, while the other one or two are working independently. As a result, even our small group tutoring programs provide highly individualized attention that is not possible in the school classroom setting.

What is your classroom like?

Most of our tutoring is done in the comfort of the student’s home or remotely via Skype. At our Katonah location, one, two, or three students sit at a table with their tutor. We find that this configuration is far more conducive to a stress-free learning experience than the classic schoolroom setup in which the teacher stands up in front of students sitting at individual desks.

What are your hours for tutoring?

We know that students and their parents have busy schedules. We offer afternoon, evening, and weekend sessions at the convenience of the student and the family. In addition, our remote tutoring option via Skype online allows us to tutor students in their own homes without intruding on their family’s other activities.

How long is a tutoring session?

Most sessions are one hour long, but some are as long as one and one half hours. The length of each session depends on the individual student’s learning style and needs, as well as the material being covered in the session.

Will you communicate with my child’s teacher at school?

Yes, with your permission. Your child’s teacher plays a key role in helping us monitor progress and continually tailor our program to ensure the highest level of success possible.

How often will my child be tutored?

Most students have one session per week, but some have more. It depends on the specific needs of your child. In order to determine the best tutoring plan for your child, please call us at (914) 548-4163 or (914) 232-1790 for a brief conversation so that we can discuss your options and establish the best possible approach and program.

Do I have to sign up for a minimum number of sessions?

No. We discuss the appropriate tutoring approach for each student with that student and the parent, and we may recommend a minimum schedule. Our main concern is that the student and tutor have a rapport and that each feels that there is a “good fit.” We do not require a contract and there is no up-front money involved. We require only that you notify us at least 24 hours in advance when you must cancel an appointment.

What if something comes up and the student can’t make a session?

Our cancellation/no-show policy requires that we be notified at least 24 hours in advance of the session being cancelled. Unless such advance notice is given, we must charge for the session.

What is the cost?

All of our tutoring programs are tailored to the individual student. Our rates vary depending on the type of tutoring offered; i.e., individual subjects or standardized tests. In order to determine the best tutoring plan for your child, please call us at (914) 548-4163 or (914) 232-1790 for a brief conversation so that we can discuss your options and establish the best possible approach and program.
